چکیده
It has been estimated that roughly 420,000 children under five years of age die annually in Latin America, most of the victims being less than a year old. Diarrhea1 disease syndromes are believed responsible for roughly one-fifth of these deaths (I). The numbers of actual diarrhea1 disease cases reported have been relatively low (on the order of 250,000 cases per year) because of statistical underregistration in some countries. Nevertheless, even these figures give some idea of this health problem’s importance (2). In Chile, it has proved possible to isolate the probable causative agents (bacteria, parasites, or viruses) in approximately 60% of the infant diarrhea cases subjected to investigation. Nevertheless, even when modem laboratory techniques are applied, in a significant share of the cases the etiology remains uncertain (3). This circumstance directs attention to the importance

Comparison of Enzyme Immunoassay, Immunochromatography, and RNA-Polyacrylamide-Gel Electrophoresis for Diagnosis of Rotavirus Infection in Children with Acute Gastroenteritis
Human rotavirus is a major etiologic agent for infantile diarrhea worldwide. It is responsible for up to 3.3 million deaths per year in children in developing countries. Various rapid and sensitive techniques have been developed to readily diagnose rotavirus gastroenteritis. In the present study, we compared the sensitivity and specificity of immunochromatography and RNA-polyacrylamide-gel elec...
متن کاملDevelopment of Direct Sandwich ELISA test for Detection of Rotavirus in Clinical Specimen
Background and Aims: Rotaviruses are one of the main causative agents of acute viral gastroenteritis in both young human and animals. Several methods have been used for diagnosis of rotavirus infection. Most of these methods are not easily available in Iran. Methods: In our study attempt was made to develop a method which could replace the commercially imported Kit. Rota virus was purified and...
متن کاملShift in human rotavirus distribution in Belo Horizonte, Brazil detected by ribonucleic acid electrophoresis.
Rotavirus has been considered the main agent of infectious diarrhea especially among younger children. We addressed the prevalence of rotavirus-associated diarrhea and the diversity of circulating electropherotypes by immunochromatography and RNA electrophoresis. Stool samples were taken from 391 children (267 with diarrhea) from the lower socioeconomic stratum who sought treatment in the Hospi...
متن کاملEpidemiology of rotavirus and astrovirus infections in children in northwestern Nigeria.
BACKGROUND Recent estimates attribute 527,000 deaths in children less than five years of age to rotavirus diarrhea annually, with 145,000 occurring in sub-Saharan Africa. Human astroviruses have been identified as one of the most frequent causes of infantile diarrhea, second in incidence only to rotavirus. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of rotavirus and astrovirus and also...
متن کاملRelative Frequency of Rotavirus Gastroenteritis in Children below 3 Years Old with Acute Gastroenteritis Referred to Afzalipour Hospital in Autumn 2008
Background & Aims: Diarrheal diseases are one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in infants and toddlers in developing countries and Rotavirus is the single most important cause of severe infantile gastroenteritis worldwide. This study was conducted to estimate the frequency and clinical manifestations of rotavirus infection in children below 3 years old with acute gastroenteritis r...
